The Howdah pistols were " NOT" to be used to shoot lions climbing up an elephant to the howdah.
It was for the hunter atop of the Howdah, to shoot himself, prior to the lion chewing on him.
The second barrel was in case the first barrel did no go off. :rotf:

Except for possibly a few in zoos, I doubt that there was a single LION in British India. - Otoh, there were numerous TIGERS & PANTHERS (As Indians & colonials called the local leopards.) there.

Btw, the MUNIR LEOPARDESS "took" over 400 humans over her about 5-year "reign of terror", according to Indian Army records.
(Her killing of humans ended in 1858, though the cause of the end of her terrorizing the local people is unknown. - My guess is that she died of disease or old age.)
