Well, they float a little while. See, the principal of our high school had a VW Bug back in 1974, and there is a pond next to his driveway, and a bunch of . . .

A minute - tops. Went down by the stern. Must be he had the heat vents open. Blub, blub.
 
The one I had didn't float since it had gaping holes in the floor, especially on the passenger side. This was really fun drivng in the winter in fresh powder, i.e. watching the passenger(preferably female) getting snow dumped on them.

Now when driving in deep water this was kind of an advantage, because the tires tended to stay on the road and I could plow through some very deep water in the underpasses while other vehicles tended to bob along.
