Hi, I’m looking for a functional replica or a build kit for a 1756 British Heavy Dragoon flintlock and would appreciate any advice on dealing with suppliers and quality and faithfulness of what is out there and what else may be available that I’ve not yet found.

It appears to me that there are a number of small variations to this pistol in its historic form (or could some originals be claiming to be a British Heavy Dragoon flintlock for marketing purposes???)...

There also seems to be quite a bit of variation in the replicas and in the kits that are being offered, however this is pretty much the image of what I have in mind that I am looking for:

The options that I have found (so far) are:

Veterans Arms 1738 Heavy Dragoon 1738 Land Service Pistol, Heavy Dragoon Pistol, reproduction flintlock pistol, pirate pistol

(It doesn’t look right to me in the shape of the butt of the grip, so not really the one that I’m after but could be swayed if it’s particularly known for very good quality and authenticity)

I’m most aware of The Rifle Shoppe build kits and would have already gone with their Heavy Dragoon Pistol 1720-1760 ( The Rifle Shoppe, Inc. - English Heavy Dragoon Pistol 1720-1760 (620) ) if they would respond to me and if I could honestly say that I still had faith in them. I purchased a Baker Rifle kit from them and was very happy with the process at the time and am particularly happy with the quality of that kit. Unfortunately they made a mistake in fulfilling the order of my Baker Rifle kit and, although they promised in August last year to rectify it and send me the correct part within a few weeks (a completed lock set ), almost a year later I’ve not received the part and they seem to have now abandoned me and, despite my always polite and friendly requests for an update, they appear to have me on ignore and won’t respond to my emails.

Anyway, I’d appreciate your thoughts and any advice that you may be able to offer.

All my current shooting Flintlocks are from Access Heritage. The newest is a 1733 french cavalry pistol in .60 cal.
I think of these guns as assembled kits and finish them to usable shape. I would be out of luck getting a gun as close to original if it were not for the Indian reproductions. My budget would not allow me to have what I do.

Muzzle loader builder supply sells kits for a heavy dragoon, that’s a close as you’ll get to that other than the rifle shoppe. Navy Arms had a special dragoon pistol, sometimen’s you’ll see those on auction.

The Indian made dragoon pistols I find to be an unattractive reproduction, not because their Indian made, I just don’t like the locks on them. The whole plate, **** and frizzen are too chunky looking and the springs are not as graceful as they ought to be.

Thanks Nick, very much appreciated - I’ll follow up with MLBS, though their web site currently advises that they not longer ship outside the US.......

Don't bother with veteran arms. He takes orders and he never even acknowledges that you put in an order he is never going to fill. He eventually answered one email saying he had a carbine charleville, but I never saw the gun.

Thankyou for that, interesting to know and very much appreciated.

India is in tough shape right now, and the gun industry is reeling from a year of unprecedented demand. We are in the hangover now, so you'll eventually be able to get stuff, but imports from India are a lost cause right now.

An update on Veteran Arms. They just called me and are shipping at least one of the guns that I ordered. So it seems they are getting stock now at least. They are sending a doglock, and they had a brass Fusil, but I'm waiting for the steel.
