Hey, Bill,

It's been a few years since I watched the tape, but I believe "The Gunsmith of Williamsburg" has several fairly good views of the rifling machine they have out there. I have been there and watched them do a portion of the rifling process. Contact me via PM and maybe we can get together to look at it.

It does cut only one groove at a time and removes very little metal from the groove with each pass. The barrel is indexed to rotate for each groove of rifling, whether it's 5, 6, 7 or whatever. If you don't have a lot of time, this method isn't the way to go.

I looked one over that they had at silver dollar city years ago.I think that it would be very easy to construct one, but it would work you alot harder than most people would like. When you cut one groove at a time in modern steel barrel blanks you will have a real job on your hands. If you are handy working in steel you could probably construct one useing a hydralic ram and hardened steel cutters, but you would have alot more in the project that you could buy several barrels for.

Hello,
you might try to get the book "Black Powder Gun Digest" wich was published by Digest Books back
in 1972. ISBN-Nr. was 0-695-80360-3.
Edited by Tony Bridges.
See Chapter 22!
The machine described allows every ROT, even
progressive, if you think about it.

Greetings G.

I took this photos some years back while visiting John Taylor. I think he said he made this rifling machine. Hopefully he'll join in and explain what we are looking at.
