Yes, I am referring to a pouch to hold your lead roundballs, made of deer leather that had previously been the deer's ball sack. My dad tried tanning one this year off a deer I killed with my bow that happened to have some large balls. So he first flipped it inside out with them little white hairs on the inside with a tennis ball on the inside so it would hold it's original shape. The problem though is at first he salt cured it first to dry it then he used neatsfoot oil on it to dry to soften it up but it ended up never getting that soft and cracked because it is thin leather. So has anyone else made one of these? I'm sure he wants to try again next year. I suggested that maybe it might work better if he split it into 2 sections and did all the work on them while they were flat and then after they're tanned do a center seam to hold the pouch together.

In the process of getting my sack tanned right now when I get it back I will let you know how it turned out.

A scrotum is gonna hafta go through the tanning process like anything else.

If you just salt dried any section of the hide, then tried to get it soft again with just neats it'll do the same thing.

The rule is every animal has enough brains to tan itself.

Have one of kangaroo (on the right) that was a gift.

I brought home the sack (and contents) with my elk meat from Colorado. I also had skinned of a 1' square piece of his mane thinking it might make some nice pan brushes.

Cleaned and scraped both and tanned them with a commercial tanning kit.

The end product was a "hair on" sack. You must work the hide as it's drying to maintain some flexibility. The more I worked it the less it looked like a sack!

Then when it was done it became a conversation piece for anyone who showed up at the house.

I never did make the piouch out of it.

Came up with a better use.

Budda LOVES it!

Luie,
I have a buddy that made a shooting pouch out of a "bull's bag". As I recall, he had it tanned.

Buddy of mine made one from a Dall sheep. Really cool! The best part is, he's not a muzzleloader, and instead uses it for his rolling tobacco.

He claims no "off" flavors, but reports it sure cut down on the people bumming cigs! :rotf:
