Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
I've used it for years on the nipples of all my percussion guns. There's other stuff that probably works as well, but I find that little squeeze tube a mite handy.
Worth pointing out that "a little dab will do ya."
Doesn't take much- just a little down in the threads on the nipple without a whole bunch of it oozing out all over the place when you screw it into place.
I've used my old beeswax & tallow ball and patch recipe for coating nipple and flash hole liner threads & never had any problems. On a rifle my Dad built, unfired since the late 1970's, the (Ampco) nipple unscrewed without any binding.
I've also used Froglube for Cap & Ball revolver nipples & it works fine.
The important thing is to use something, & there's a lot of stuff that will work great over time. Just look for a material that won't dry out or varnish if left to sit for several years.
I have used it as well as CVA breechplug grease, Never-Seize, and Rig gun grease. All seem to work equally well though I don't over tighten the nipple and remove it every time I clean the gun. Oh, I have used Teflon tape too but the other items are much faster to apply. They all will help prevent wear on threads that are used a lot.
Many years back, I bought a tube of choke tube lube. I still have it and use it all the time on the various threads on my guns. A tube will last forever. Just a tiny dab on the threads of your nipple will make it more easily removed the next time you go to remove it. It's good stuff but, actually any good grease will do as well for your nipple threads. I use the choke tube grease simply because I have it and a tube lasts forever.
Not a waste of time at all. I've always used choke tube lube, from Birchwood Casey, on the nipple threads of my two Enfields and my Sharps New Model 1863. Why risk getting them stuck from BP fouling or stripping the threads?
