Has anyone tried Aqua Fortis on good quality cherry? I have some and am considering trying it just to see what I get. I plan to build a couple of stocks from it and am starting to think of some finishing options

Search the forum for using lye on cherry. I haven't tried it myself, but some of the guys get good results from it based on the photos... IIRC, one of the members used Ez-off oven cleaner.

I agree with Roy, I've used it on knife handles and it gets almost like walnut. Try it on a scrap piece and rub it back with some 320 grit paper...Bud

I have used a few different stains with cherry and this has to be my favorite so far.

now if I can only remember what all I used :haha:

Please post it when you do remember Roy!
I have a E Tenn in cherry, that is getting close to the finishing stage.

i'll mess around with a scrap piece and see if I can do it again

alright I used a coat or two of LMF Honey Maple and let it dry, then I used a water based walnut stain that I have. You may get the same results with Birchwood Casey walnut. Need to let the LMF dry because when still wet the wood will not take the water based stain. I don't know if you could first use the walnut or not, it may come out too dark. Try on a scrap piece first it may take the stain differently.

I recently recieved a piece of Cherry stained with Easy Off oven cleaner. It looked pretty dang good to me. Nice rich color that was not to dark.
Just something else to test.

Hello Gentlemen,

I've read and listened and learned tons form you all.

This is my first post.

I'm completing a Bucks co. rifle in cherry. Did some samples with lye. They came out great. I have photos but not the knowledge to post them. If someone wants to post them i'll e-mail them to you.

Should be putting the gun together this weekend. I'll have photos of it on Monday.

Thanks all.

Roy & Packdog, Thanks to both of you for your ideas. I'll try both on some scrap and see which I prefer.
