My campground has decided to go "liberal"and no longer allows us to burn charcoal at the rifle range. (which I built for the express purpose of doing demo BP shoots :cursing: )Camp owned .22's are still ok which you have to rent and buy a box of 50 shells for $8. Well I guess it ain't that liberal, at least ya can still shoot! I can't up and tell them to stuff it because thats where my forge is! :cursing:
So I'm thinking of doing a primitive archery/hawk and knife/ firestarting rendezvous instead...you know...a quiet one! Do you guys think there would be an interest? Any ideas?

 Be a great idea and beside you won't have to clean any guns after when you are done. My club just had a shoot where the first half of the shoot was a bow shoot where you wher indians who had to shoot for game meat and white settlers with firearms and indian enemies. If I was smart after we shoot the settlers with guns said we were taking theier guns, me and my partner could have use have used are to shoot the knock down target at the end of the trail. The targets were made from 1/8 plywood and the bows were only 45 lbs, but there were rabbit squirrels deeer turkeys. The people target was same plywood and 5 was just heads on a log. I been on a wood walk for hawk and knife were you had to throw at swinging tartgets that swung left and right, and swinging targets that swunf toward you. Target on thew ground and targetrs up in the fork of a tree; throw thru a loop and a target laying on the ground flat were you had to flip the hawk and knife to get them to sick in the block. Firestart could be for the fastest to flame, the fastest to build fire to boil water and the fastest to melt lead. They had a little archery this past year at the spring Fort de Chartres rendezvous. Not asssociated/recognized with the fort, just a group of guys who decide to shoot the tourist what traditional/primitve archery was like. The bows had to be self bows and the arrows wooden but they couls havbe plastic nocks and metal field point. We jusst shoot at cardboard target with hay bales behind them. We had are own blanket shoot prizes ahve the completition was done. We then would shoot off and on rest of the time for fun. Go for it. You will be amazed how many guys will pull out their longbows and show up for some fun shoot and to shoot the bull.

While I still like to shoot my rifle, and fowler I think an archery /knife/ hawk rondezvous would be worth trying. Just as long as that little copperhead that was under my ground cloth at your last roundezvous isn't still around and all grown up.

Stumblin Wolf,
Sounds like a great idea! I would
suggest giving as much notice as possible
if you decide to go forward. BTW, Where is your
campground located?

I got with the camp owner today and the archery rendezvous is a GO! Still need to figure out a date...no primitive camp or clothes required. About the only rule right now is you have to have a traditional selfbow, longbow, or recurve, wood arrows and field points only. We'll have around 30 McKenzie style 3D targets and a hawk/knife trail.More details to follow...

keeps us posted on any date's stumbin wolf! any extra points given for campin or wearin the clothes the way your supposed to? ya know after i typed that i thought the heck with the extra points i'd dress right anyway! :yakyak:

You should have fun. I just moved from New Mexico to Grand Junction, CO. We had some very dry years in New Mexico - but it did not stop our rendezvous. We did exactly as you are doing, animal targets for primitive bow, several knife & hawk throws and liers contest. I have to say that I like shooting events better but we still got to see everyone, camp and tell those tall tales. Primitive archery is becoming a major event at modern rendezvous here in the West. At "Raton" they get about 60 shooters in the daily archery walk. My favorite archey event is the "One tie -all tie" - how we play this is to shoot at a 6" bull, everyone shoots in turn, as soon as two shooters have hit the bull, arrows are picked up, the shooting line is moved back 10 yds, this is done untill only one shooter hits the bull out of a full rotation at the farthest distance, the entry fee is $1.00, 1/2 of the pot to the winner and 1/2 of the pot back to the club. We also play this game when we can shoot rifles. I Hope your event goes well. The Strawstalker.

I just got back from an event that had a primative bow shoot along with the BP. I figured it would have to be a selfbow to qualify but after talking to a few guys shooting they said just no laminated fiberglass. Wood to wood would have been ok. If I knew this I would have brought mine along.
