I’ve been getting up at 4:20am to go deer hunting for the past several days, home after dark, and some things don’t get done on crazy schedules like that”¦one thing I forgot was to shake out a coffee can of corn in the back yard every afternoon like I normally do.

Came down at 4:20 this morning and noticed the backyard 8 pointer out the kitchen window standing at the little bare spot at the edge of the floodlight where I put out the corn, trying his darnedest to find a kernel. I turned on the kitchen lights and get the coffee pot going and a few minutes later noticed he’d gone. Finished getting my boots on and noticed him standing there again, this time looking at me in the kitchen lights.

Finished getting things all together and saw he was still standing there”¦looking a little like a lost puppy”¦so I said to myself what the heck, two more minutes won’t bother”¦went into the garage, got a coffee can of corn, walked it around the end of the house and he was gone”¦poured it out so it made some noise and by the time I got back into the house, he had stepped forward out of the darkness and was eating it.

I just laughed at myself thinking what a rugged hunter I must be”¦here I am, taking a minute to feed a nice 8 point shooter looking for a handout before I jump in the truck to drive 30 miles and sit in the cold in hopes of getting a shot at a nice 8 pointer!!

The deer are getting smarter than you, ya better take that can with you and see if he follows. :haha:

Aint it the truth!!!

I beat myself senseless in the hills to take a deer, and meanwhile there's a buck hanging around our house. My neighbors and my wife would prefer I shoot the one at home (and we live way out, so it wouldn't be a problem) to get it out of their prize flowerbeds, but NOOOOOOO, I gotta go bounce my butt up and down the hills to shoot one. Sheeesh!

Roundball, you old softy.... :haha:

Yes, without a doubt, all deer hunters are a little bit strange. But not as strange as duck hunters... :rotf:

Hello from Germany!

in some kind the same. Always when I'm outside and have no gun with me I see several roes. When I'm armed I don't see anything except squirrels and singing birds. :rotf:

Sounds like home I have eight deer that hang out in the back yard,(inside city limits) one doe was up front by the garbage can this morning when I left to hunt, saw a nice fork horn in the woods but he stood broadside behind a stump looking at me and I could only see his head and tail ...waited with gun shoulderd for two minutes hopeing he would step out then he bolted so fast I could not get a shot...came home and had to wait for a doe and fawn to move to pull into the driveway, it was still a very good half day of hunting.

:haha:
I'd do the same thing.
We're a strange bunch for sure.

I used to love to go feed the ducks down at the lake. Then when the season opened I'd be putting them in the freezer.

Same here. They're in full rut now around here. Throw in a Bumper crop of acorns (had to use a pushbroom in the driveway), bucks, does and about a dozen skippers running in the neighborhood. And I'm driving 300 miles to Pa. in 3 weeks, go figure. :shake:

Hey you rugged hunter, you ain't no different than the rest of us, Crazy breed ain't we. Just remember, that backyard buck has become a friend, a mentor. All those hours watching him up close has has given you a chance to learn the inner workings of our quarry the whitetail. But don't be misled, they will still leave you scratching your noggin. Hey at least the 30 mile trip will give you a chance to ponder all the craziness :hmm:

RB,
I dont think it strange.
I find it outright Honorable and the definition of a true sportsman! hats off to you :hatsoff:
you are playing the game by the rules.

you are one to ride the river with.

Yes, I am a strange one as well. I plant pines for them, for winter cover, plant food plots and even then, I can't say I really hunt those areas. I just do that to make them comfortable. I pass up the little guys and hope to see them next year. I may even pass up the three yr. old, if he looks like he will be awesome next year. I enjoy the outdoors, more than the meat. Sharing their world, even for a few minutes, is a thrill for me. Big tough guy hunter, aren't I.

my neighbor hunts down in Elbert county Ga. and there are deer running around here. me I'm likely going to W. Va.
the most unbelievable thing I've heard was when said neighbor told me he met an Injun down there that hangs his wifes used 'sanitary napkins' in a bush to draw in bucks. we've joked so much tho that I ain't sure I ought'a beleive that one OR NOT! :haha:

I'm doing the same thing (the feeding part, not the sanitary napkin part :haha: ), my son and I have feeders out on the property because we had a late spring freeze and we're afraid they won't have enough acorns to get through the winter. They're eating better than we are.

I'm also feeding a fat little opossum that lives under the back porch in a dog house I put there for (oddly enough) my DOG. Just found out about him, though - he may be evicted soon.
