I was browsing a website and came across a trade rifle by JP Gunstocks in 54 cal and I have always wanted one of these guns in the last 4 or so years and I have been trying to get one for a long time. I can swing the purchase if I sell my other gun

My current gun is a custom left hand with a swamped barrel in 50 cal and I have been kicking around getting a little more gun for a while in case I get a chance to shoot elk again.

What do you all think?

I have no experience with JP Gunstocks rifles. As I understand it they are no longer in business. It was run by Jim Searles and was based out of Las Vegas.

They offered semi-custom/production guns made with American parts, kind of like TVM and others do now.

Good Luck and Enjoy, J.D.

Mine is a swamped barrel - can't remember the weight but it would be scary to rebore it to 54 cal

I found a similar thread on the ALR forum. I suggest you check it out before selling your rifle. It was compared to a Hatfield. I sold a Lyman trade rifle to buy a Hatfield. Biggest ml mistake I ever made.

Here is the link: Link

Another dead link! I sincerely apologize. I have never had trouble posting a link before.   This attempt is longer than the thread.

You can find the thread at the ALR site, or through a Google search. Please read this before you sell your rifle. Good luck. - John

The link doesn't work because the Muzzleloading Forum Computer blocks it.

When we signed up for membership we all read the forum rules, one of which says:

Forum rule #18: Do not post links to sites that contain Muzzleloading Forums.

Because our members sometimes forget rule #18, the forum owner has the computer set up to force them to comply.

I guess it's sort of like all large restaurants frown on a guest passing out the menu for some other restaurants in his establishment.

Most of the supplier web sites can be posted on the forum without a problem because they really are not a forum type of site.

You are right, of course, Jim. I forgot about that rule. The thread should be easy to find. I hope I haven't broken another rule by mentioning that thread. This is my favorite of all the ML forums. - John

BTW: It was my Lyman GPR that I sold to buy the Hatfield, not my trade rifle.

I met the owners and saw their guns many many years ago at a Great Western Gun Show in Pomona Cal.(LA County Fair Grounds) They appeared to be well made and robust. I wanted one, but were out of my price range.
