Well, now that I have my Chuck Thom barrel at hand, it is time to get cracking on the serpentine arquebus. I didn't want walnut, as it is such an obvious choice, and the local hardwood shop had cherry, but at a high price. Just for kicks I mentioned beech, as I know it is a traditional European stock wood, and by gad if they didn't have some nice 8/4 stock at only 3.49 per foot. Turns out it is from Germany.
So I'll be working up my stock out of German beech, which seems extremely appropriate. Hope I don't turn it into firewood with my clumsy hands ...
 
All that maple there in Oregon and YOU pick beech! Good choice. It is a good wood for your project. Should carve nice. Hope your tools stay sharp!
