I need help.I have been drooling over the stock at loyalist arms lately, and can't quite decide on what to get.My dilema is between the india pattern bess or artillery carbine. Is there much info out there on the arty carbine as to its actual use by the british empire. My own internet searches have produced little info. Tks in advance bob.

colonelxyz,

You will find reference to the 1756 Artillery Carbine in at least three sources:

"Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann

"Muskets of the Revolution and the F & I War" by Bill Ahearn

"Pattern Dates for British Ordnance Small Arms 1718-1783" by DeWitt Bailey

All three contain pictures of examples with Bailey providing very detailed descriptions. It was definitly used by the British during our revolution.

I cut down a shortland pattern bess years ago and just taking a foot off the end made that bugger kick like a mule.I wouldnt think that little wieght off a gun would matter. So you might ask oppinions of shooting a short Bess.My long land with a 46 inch barrel doesnt kick me now.....Mark...P.S that carbine is cool though

i cut my sons bess to a bbl length to 24" and it had no effect on shot placement actually does shot loads better and felt recoil is nill :hmm:

The india pattern bess is kinda the "plane jane" of the bess family,
Earlier ones "1st model or 1st transitionary" have much more elaborate carving details and the brass is fancier.

I myself prefer the 1st model bess to the 3rd

As far as the carbine...do you mean the bess heavy dragoon carbine.

Or the artillery carbine "62-65 cal"
I think the artillery carbine is a earlier english pattern, thus fancier.

Either/or I think you will enjoy either..

Two bellys...yeah we could never figure it out...That gun has made the rounds in this area and recently I had a chance to get it back but missed it for lack of funds..One guy that had it really made it look nice by swapping some brass for steel furniture,Adding a wood rammer, reengraving and back dating the lock(this was a Japenese Dixie Gun Works Bess)Honed and straightened the barrel,Then He went and counterfitted a famous gunmakers mark and blew it :nono: ...Mark
