I’m having trouble finding the American Frontiersman Magazine in RI. Looks like everyone that carried it discontinued it and have replaced it with the Backwoodsman Magazine. Looks like the only way to get the Frontiersman is to get it on line. Anyone subscribe to Backwoodsman and if so how would you rate it? Any and all info appreciated. Thanks Art

I pick my copy at the book store B.A.M.Slab full of good information, how to and the like,If I could only get one A.F.M.would be the one, just because there is more in it,but that said I get both and Muzzle Loader.Subscribe and you get it before the stores/book stores do.

The "Backwoodsman" magazine is an entertaining read with articles running the gamut of muzzleloading to surviving the apocalypse in the 21st century. Good articles on home canning and living off the grid. Some good articles on knives.

I get American Frontiersman at the local Barnes and Noble or Tractor Supply.

Backwoodsman is one of my favorite magazines. It is often informative and always fun. The topics cover a huge variety from traditional skills to modern DIY projects. The other favorite is Muzzleloader. I subscribe to both and keep all back issues.

Don't see many folks from RI on firearm-related forums. I grew up in Newport. Haven't lived there in over 40 years but it was a great place to grow up in the 1950s and 60s.

Backwoodsman, while not as polished, is a great magazine and I look forward to every issue. Before Charlie Richie Sr. started publishing his own magazine, way back in the 70's, he wrote for another mag, long discontinued, published out of Big Timber, MT, that focused on muzzleloading topics, anyone care to guess the defunct magazine's name? Sorry to the OP for wandering OT, but I couldn't resist.

I too pick up Backwoodsman magazine on a regular basis at Tractor Supply. I've thought about subscribing, but just pick it up. It is a fun magazine with a unpolished, cheesy feel to it, but I keep buying it. Some of the muzzleloading articles are real basic and don't offer a lot for regulars on this site, but again it is a fun magazine.

I stopped buying American Frontiersman several issues back. While very pretty in production, I found a lot of the "how to" articles a little short on the actual "how to". For the price, and the time lag between issues..., they should (imho) be spot-on.
:idunno:

Backwoodsman I buy every month, but one needs to remember that its a submission magazine..., the authors are not paid for the articles, and the editor doesn't necessarily edit them all that much for content. The author contacts the magazine and ask is the story idea is worth doing a story and submitting it. There is a new editor there, the son of the old editor and owner, and he might be doing more with the overall product.

So you get a mishmash of stuff, a lot is informative, some is..., not so much..., but I think it's a good magazine.

And how, I used to read it cover to cover and always looked forward to the next edition, I still pull old copies out now and then, I always got such a kick out of Honest Don's tales, John Baird must have also for all the heartburn some of those stories caused or he wouldn't have kept publishing Honest Don, but Baird never shied away from a controversy. Those times did shine, I do miss 'em, but the BWM still has some of that flavor

I had to get rid of my whole collection of the bsr,I stored them in my garage and they got moldy

I STOPPED BUYING American Frontiersman Magazine when there how to articles required a full machine or carpentery shop.

Thanks for all the information! I did find a new vendor for the American Frontiersman locally. Their also selling the Backwoodsman too, so I picked up the new and last issue. Backwoodsman is a great Magazine. Looks like there going to be a lot of good reading in the new American Frontiersman too. After I check it out I’ll start a new post with some of the highlights. Thanks again Art

I have been reading backwoodsman since 2014 and I’ve had a subscription since 2015 it’s a very good magazine.

I really like The Backwoodsman magazine. They always have a few issues in the magazine racks at the checkout stands of our local supermarket.

They always seem to have a couple an article or two on traditional muzzleloaders and many of them are about the lower end production guns. Kind of fills the gap we were talking about in another thread on the "Muzzleloader" magazine. The last issue had an article on the Traditions Kentucky Pistol kit. I enjoyed the article, especially when the author admitted he used two ball peen hammers to peen the dovetail for the sight because could not find the box that contained all his punches...that's something I can relate to!
