What is the definition of a "fowlers bag" and how does it differ from a shooting bag??

Good question, I have never heard that.
I'm guessing a fowlers bag might have compartments for shot, wads, etc.
Looking forward to responses.

I've never seen an "official" definition, but that's my impression too. Lots tend to be bigger, too. Some also have loops on them for hanging game. I've tried the loops, and while it looks cool, they really discombuberate your shooting and even your walking if you hang much game at all from them.

I don't know the definition, if there is one. Here's a bag I bought as a shotgunning bag, could be called a fowler's bag, I guess. It is bigger than the average shot pouch, measures 11" wide, 10" high.

It has pockets on the outside for overpowder, cushion and overshot cards.

Inside are the main compartment and two pockets on the back of the bag.

It is a very convenient bag to use, comfortable to carry, puts your wads at your fingertips when you need them.

It has come to mean a bag with compartments for wads and cards. Whether originals were designed that way, or even if the hunters USED wads and cards prior to 1850 or so (vs. tow or other wadding) is debatable. Some have a shot pouch or reservior built right in.

I have come to prefer a single pocket bag even for my fowlers (carrying my wax lubed wads in a tin), though I have one with three small pockets for cards and a wad pocket seperate from the main pocket. WAY more complicated than any original bag I ever came across.

Looks well designed and well made. Also looks modern. Still, I like. Where did you get it?
Yes, it's not reenactor gear. I bought it many years ago from a company called E. Christopher Manufacturing, Miamitown, OH. It was their "Great Miami shotgunning bag". I think an essentially identical one is sold by TOTW.

and if you dig around on amazon enough you can find it for about half what tracks wants.

just sayin. I have the near identical bag. I think I paid $20.00

I've just finish making 2 bags similar to Spences but smaller. 9" wide x 5" high and 1 1/2 deep.

I used to trade at E. Christopher when I lived near Friendship. Interesting store.

Spence 10 and Linc, thanks for "exposing" yer bag for all to see :haha: I have never been to a "ronnyvoo" and find it interesting to see what is being made/built by ML'ers...........Boog

I have 2 other bags that I made before the one pictured one of which I hunted with for a couple of weeks. It is small and light weight. I carried wads, cards, premeasured shot, powder measure and an extra flint.
I carried a small horn of powder in my vest pocket. I loved it. Small, unencumbering and didn't even realize it was there. I'll take some pics and post them.

Here are the pics of the other 2 bags. Made from cloth and leather.

Both of these bags have a section of arrowshaft encased in the back of the bag as a stiffener. The second bag I added pockets onto the strap for a powder measure.

My fowler bag-- found this at the annual trade fair in town..The man that built this one does nothing but bags...

15" wide
11' tall
6-7" wide

brain tanned leather bottom
heavy canvas aged and sealed..water proof....blood proof too!
adjustable leather shoulder strap..with buckle

I would recommend this size no smaller.

Cards go over the powder to seal the pressure in the bore and over the shot to keep it in the barrel.

Here are a couple more bag that I've made in the last few days. Deerskin lined with ticking in one, cotton drill in the other. I wove the straps on an Inkle loom.

This one has a pocket on the outside and one inside

Nice bags. I had a bag for each smoke pole I had and they were all "adjusted" or "designed" for the particular firearm...AND those bags shown here are very nice.....

I eccentially (sp?) have a bag and horn for each caliber muzzleloader that I have. Soon to be one for each gun. I am finding that I prefer a small bag so I don't have more than my neccessities for shooting. I really hate fumbling around trying to find what I need in the bag.
