Mornin there young man,,
Yes, my leather stitchin has always stayed tight, I saddle soap them bout 2 or 3 times a year, I have some leather work that is bout 5 years old and have no problem with em,, yet,, It's just a quick and easy way for me to build stuff, leather punch set and a leather cutter and I just play,,

Good Morning! I'm fixin' to go deer hunting, too. Will be taking the .54 GPR. My flintlock won't be finished till after Christmas :shake: but good things are worth the wait. May the Good Master smile kindly on your hunting endeavors :hatsoff:

Nice!

I have a small belt bag I carry when hunting with my percussion during regular deer season with just enough fixins for 6 shots. I like the idea of hooking the drag line right to it. That way you don't forget to stick it in your coat pocket.

I used a litte veiner (sp?) to scribe/cut a line 1/8" inside around the flap border, then re-set it to 1/4" and cut a second parallel one to give a double line pattern around the edge. It's normally the tool used to make the thread groove for sheaths and such. It's amazing what a difference that little feature gives a bag, and it only takes a minute to do it.

No (no digital camera, either) but this will show what I'm talking about.

Bag & belt on left is "as original". Bag (unlined :haha: ) & belt on right is artists' rendering of the 2" belt and bag with the border scribed in (it actually cuts a long curly-cue out of the leather's surface finish and shows the lighter color beneath. It gives the edges a "finished" look. I also burnish the edges with a antler tine to round them a bit.

This is the guy: Tandy calls it a "stitching groover".

Mine isn't this fancy and I have to use a screwdriver to adjust the depth.

Found it - here's the one I have.

No stitching in the groove (guess you could). I just use it for the lines. I see some bags with a spiderweb pattern and I guess you could run this around a pattern to produce that. The shaft is pressed up against the edge of the leather and there's a little hole in tip of the angled piece (blade) that peels out a groove in the leather. Great for the edge of sheaths for guiding your awl and protecting the threads afterwards (that's why I origionally bought the tool).
