I have seen this question asked on other forums but I must ask it here. A couple of people on the web tout the use of Ballistol for lubricating their Colt Replicas and to prevent rust. This seems counter to other posts where its use is not recommended because it does not prevent rust.

I have used Ballistol as a moose milk potion on my rifles but use Barricade as a rust preventive and REM oil as a lubricant. What do y'all say?

I have used Rem oil on my guns for years and have not had any problems. I do a quick wipe with an alcohol dampened patch before I shoot and no problems with tar buildup. I haven't tried it as a lube but will try it,thanks for the idea.

Fishmusic, I agree with what you seem to know. But I stopped using it on anything as I never had rust till I started using it in my bore.

My results are different.I use Ballistol on all my Black powder guns. I use corrosive caps and Pyrodex powder for most of my shooting. No rust at all after many years of use. I use it full strength as a final .

If your gun is free of black powder or pyrodex residue just about any type of lubricant will keep it from rusting. I grab whatever is closest to me when I clean and lube. Ballistol, WD40, olive oil, break free, Howard’s feed and wax, penetrating oil or motor oil. Anything you use in the bore or chambers will come out completely with a blast of brake cleaner prior to shooting the next time.

I've used Rem Oil for years as a rust preventative, especially in bores and cylinder chambers. A little goes a LONG way and wipes out easily just before shooting. For exteriors, once clean I wipe it down with a silicone cloth then use Renaissance Wax on metal and wood. Haven't had a speck of rust in decades.
