I was give a 30 year old flintlock rifle in 45 cal. I have taken the rifle down and have cleaned and refinished the barrel that is now in the white and I would like to keep it in the white. Other than keeping the barrel oiled and clean is there anything I can put on the barrel to keep it in good shape and in the white?

Just wanting to understand correctly, it sounds like "the barrel is actually finished" and not really 'in-the-white'...it's really just "without color" and you want to keep it that way?

You can put the same finish as is used on the stock it just needs redone occasionaly. A polished Brite barrel will need periodicaly polishing to stay that way. most alow a brite barrel to take on its own patina, just wiping it with an loiled cloth after use.

Barrel is plane, bare metal, silver in color.

I now keep it wiped down with a light oiled rag.

With time your plain bright shiny barrel will take on a steel gray color if you don't polish it with abrasives. If you just oil it and keep it clean it will achieve the gray patina color all by itself.

i built my wife a .45 using a Green Mountain barrel some years ago, and she wanted to keep it 'in the white,' so i put some Renaissance Wax.

here's a link (hope this works)
http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=17424

this source is Rockler, the wood working supply folks, and you might find it cheaper if you put "renaissance wax" into your search engine.

the stuff is kind of pricey, but it works as advertised, and a little goes a very long way ... still have the same can i bought years ago.

good luck with your project, and make good smoke!

I just use an oiled rag, but it is starting to get a bit dull, which is what i was hoping for. So just doing this will not keep it shiny, but it will get a really nice gray color with time.
