Why do you think a .54 caliber C profile 42" Colerain barrel weighs 5.5lbs and the same Rice barrel weighs 5 lbs?

Oddly enough the 44" ,54 Caliber C profile Rice barrel weighs 4.4 lbs.

offhand i would say that the colerain has more metal in it.

tak care, daniel

The letter profiles that Rice uses are slightly different than the same letter profiles that Colrain uses, unless there have been changes. Rice's C will not fit in a stock cut for Colrains C. However, I can't see where that could make a pound difference. Maybe a typo?

Up till a few years ago I thought the main barrel makers had all gotten together and figured out a "standard in barrel profiles" and labeled them A,B,C,D, to help lessen the confusion and make it more convienient when you buy a kit because you'd then be able to buy any barrel you choose and have it fit in your precarved kit. Sadly, such is not the case. A "C" weight Colerain isn't the same as a Rice which isn't the same as a Getz. Why they can't all get together on this is beyond me....
And, I've noticed in the past couple of years , some barrel makers don't hold tolerance on their barrel profiles. I just had to practically hand inlet a barrel into a kit this week because the barrel was so over sized and out of spec.

That's interesting Mike, I too was under the same impression. I was hoping that, for example, one could swap out one c weight Getz for another, effectively going from a fowler to a rifle without much difficulty.

Swaping one Getz C weight for another Getz C weight is no problem. It's when you tyr to switch between barrel makers is when you run into trouble.
I think Rice is copying Getz profiles, and they should interchange, but Colrain and Getz profiles don't interchange....all very confusing. :hmm:

Mike I wouldn't be surprised if Rice is copying Getz's profiles since they both make barrels for the chambers kits.

On a side note if anyone is looking to build a spectacular english sporting rifle from a Chambers kit they have a gorgeous stock there now. It's english walnut with burl and tiger stripped. I would have loved to have it but I would just screw up a piece of wood that nice.

I ordered the C profile 42" .54 Rice barrel from Buckeye Barrels today. I think I'll be pleased with it.

Mebbe its cause Rice does such a nice job of finishing his barrrells inside and out.... :rotf:

I believe Mr. Brooks is correct. The profile letters don't mean much. I have one Rice barrel, and it is a cut above most production barrels.

It came today. UPS lost it over the weekend.

Rice 42" Swamped "C profile" round bottomed rifling. It's a real honey, inside and out.

I'm probably gonna use the Chamber's Early Ketland lock. I'd consider the Christian Springs lock, but I figure folks will be building the fire out of the Christian Springs rifles since Mark Baker has one now. :hatsoff:

I have an Excel application to calculate swamped barrel weights. I entered the Rice specifications and the result is 5.12 US pounds or 2.32 kg (without the breech plug). I looked up the Colerain specs and they are exactly the same.

That's odd, I don't recall building Baker a Christian Springs rifle. :hmm: He always said he wanted me to build him a rifle one day....now I'm crushed... :( :winking:
