Hi all, new to the site. I found it by looking for a pattern to make a rifle case out of some deer hides I've had laying around.

Does anyone have any tips or patterns they could share? I'm essentially looking to simple make basic case.

I've searched and looked at the traditional pictures posted here, but have yet to see a plain old pattern I can trace out on the leather.

Thanks!

Jeff

Lay your rifle down on a folded piece of paper large enough to accomodate the entire gun (barrel along the fold line). Trace the profile. Add a little to length and width then cut. Pattern done.

Basically the same process, but I have some canvas cases from Track of the Wolf laying around. I just used them for a pattern. Easy and quick.

It occurred to me to come back and pass along one insight about leather gun cases, Trekjeff-

Blade front sights really hang up on them when you go to extract the gun. I'm still trying to sort it out, but basically a nice, form-fitting case is not your friend if you have visions of carrying the gun into the field with it.

Additionally, leather holds moisture and may cause rust while Canvas can be tough on a finish. Blanketing works rather nicely.

what if it was fur side to the rifle?

Any leather, fur or no fur will hold moisture.
Wool cases seem to attract moisture. Either is good only for short term storage while traveling.
I prefer the thick synthetic, silicone treated cloth cases as the do not hold moisture. They sorta 'breath'. Rust is very traditional. I'm not that PC.

In reality, the only time my guns are in a case is when they are being trasported in a vehicle.

Same here. In our wet climate you want good circulation and stable temps for storage.

I only have one made of leather and use it for show. The rest I make in a simple manner. I basically wrap a straight canvas tube around my gun. Then I sew up the bottom and side seam. I then paint it with latex paint to resemble red barn milk paint. I finish by adding a leather tie thong held in place with a leather strip sewn at the opening.

Works very well and is extremely cheap.

Here are two of them - one tied off and the other showing it as an open tube. I put my guns in butt first.

Add a shoulder strap for hands-free carry...

Canvas is a great material, in my opinion, for an external case, but I usually stick mine in a blanket liner inside. Make both tubes long enough to flap over, and sew ties onto the end.

If you're looking for a case you'll use for more than one gun, make it long. You can't fit a gun with a 44" barrel into a 42" case.

It is paint. The paint is on the outside. The inside stays soft enough for the guns. I do not cut a long flap - the tube is just long enough to accommodate any of my guns. As Col. says, you can put a short gun in and fold more over, but if the gun is too long...
