TANSTAAFL,
Thanks! I think she's a little short by Chunk Gun standards. 38" barrel and only .40 cal. I went to the York shoot this last year and most everyone had step stools to load with. :: She'll make a great offhand shooter though.

Except for the lack of browning and the curly maple that's a close copy of my famous "Long Tall Sally". I used black walnut after learning that curly maple was less common than other hardwoods although some straight grain or lightly curled maple.

I know this is going to sound like a smart A reply. Sorry if it does, It's not meant that way. I'm mearly asking a question. :relax:

What do you suppose they did with the pieces of maple that were real curly? They certainly would not have said "This is too fancy to use"?

While it may not have been common, and I will be the first to agree that this is above average wood, Jerry Noble's 3 books are full of Southern guns made with curly maple. Alfred Bearden(p101, vol.II) and J.B Gross(p111, vol II) both as pretty wood as i have seen. :imo:

Packdog: Any of that wood ya find that is Too Fancy, just send it my way, as I would love to have it.

You did a Superb job on the rifle..... I think it looks fantastic & it is a beautiful piece of wood, regardless of the style of rifle it is on.

Packdog -
I think that you should try building another rifle - as this one is unacceptable. Just box this one up and send to me.
No joking - beautiful rifle!! Also, in one of my favorite calibers! Great job!!!!
Thanks for posting the picture.

Packdog - Beautiful southern mountain rifle! My southern .54 is being built with extra curly maple, whiskey brown stock and probably a similar patchbox. :front:

Nice looking piece Packdog. :hatsoff: What can you hunt with it down your way? .40 cal not legal for deer in PA.

Guys, Thanks for the compliments.
It was built to be my personal gun but I have decided to build another and try running the tang up and over the comb. I've never tried that so I'm open to any and all suggestions on the best/easiest/least likely to screw up way of doing that? I stopped just short of the comb on this one.

Wildatheart,
.40 is legal for about everything in TN. including deer. You can't take turkey with a rifle is the only thing. They could not very well make a .40 illegal for deer when Davy Crockett went around killing all them bears with a .40. haha!
