Bear grease

I have two 3 pound coffee cans of renderd Bear grease what is the best way to use it for patch lube thin it some how or use it as is.brothern law just got another bear, so there will be more this year.

I mixed mine with beeswax and maybe something else, can't remember as it was way back in 2000 when I got my first and only bear. I'm sure someone will chime in. Great stuff.

I have settled on a 65% bear oil, 35% beeswax that serves me well. It only takes a sec or two to become quite pliable rubbing it between two fingers and can be spread on a patch like that or what I do is warm up the mix in a tin and drop several patches into it. Once the patches stiffens up just scrape off the excess with a butter knife. I'll fill up a brass tinder box I use with prelubed patches and am good for a while. :thumbsup:

I have some,20yrs old or more. I keep it in freezer till I need it. I only use it for target shoots. I let it warm up and rub in the patching material. The more you shoot the slicker the barrel gets. Mine goes to oil at room temps. My grandson won a ist place at his first shoot in Nov. Used it in my .45 Seneca. The first time I used it I got second with same gun with .36 barrel.20yrs ago. Good stuff. Dilly

Hey Swamp have you ever tried it just plain Bear oil?

I just picked up aTHOMPSON CENTER CHEROKEE with the ..45 & .32 barrels should work good in them then.

Yep, used some at the range in the very beginning. It's great stuff! At the time I had a pint to play with and wasn't sure if I'd ever get more. Mixing with beeswax makes it last a lot longer. Now I have a steady supply of fat coming in every year but I end up giving a lot away so it still makes sense to mix it. All the flintlock deer I've taken have been with using a bear oil/beeswax mix lube on patches/wads.

I live in north eastern Pennsylvania lotof mounting shopes around here get alot of the fat if need be.

 

I keep it in freezer till I need it.
