In the middle of a cap and ball discussion, and specifically how to prevent chain fires, an old timer said he always put grease over the percussion caps after placement.

Was he confusing this with greasing over the ball or is there sometihing to this?

Still new and learning.
Thanks in advance.

Well he could have gotten confused, or he may have been or is practicing an olde wifes tail proceedure.
There is a theory that grease over the nipple will keep things dry,.
The idea holds no water with me,,

There are a lot of us who think that most chain fires are caused by the percussion caps being loose or falling off of the loaded chamber nipples.

If these things happen a chain fire can be the result.

I don't know about the 'old timer' but I don't think the cap caused chain fire is a new idea so it is very possible that some old timer coated his caps with grease.
It wouldn't hurt them and, if nothing more, it would water proof the area.

Man someone posted pictures of a C&B revolver being fired in the dark and I worried the first couple of times I fired mine! However if I were to guess I would say if loaded for a while the grease would migrate and kill the caps! Geo. T.
