Made a horn for my buddy's son who attended Brown Univ on a wrestling scholarship. Their mascot is a bear and he got his first muzzleloader buck last year. He asked me to make a horn for Josh
for Christmas and this is what I came up with.
The other side has his name and "His Horn 2013" scrimmed on it. Just wish I had some artistic talent cause I'm thinking it might look more like a dog than a bear. Either way the muzzle is ugly, the ear is set back too far and the hair is all wrong, but hopefully he'll like the folky side of it. On the bright side, she is air tight.

I like it :). And it definately pops out as "bear", doesn't look at all like a dog to me.

Sukat,
I think if you scratched a right ear up and forward a bit closer to the bear's left ear, you will have it a little closer to looking more like a bear. To me, the right ear looks like it is sticking out of the bears neck. ___ You can cover the left ear by scratching more hair on your bear!

As Horner said, if you don't like it fixing it is fairly simple but I like it and saw a bear when I looked at it before reading your post. You did a good job, I'm sure the young man will be pleased.

Note, that I didn't say it didn't look like a bear!

I was just telling him how to make it look more like a bear by a small adjustment! __ That's all!
:surrender:

It is nice, but horners tip is a good one.
Maybe it's just the two dimensional picture, but if ya hold yer thumb over the right ear,, :idunno:

didn't mean to piss ya off Rick and i didnt think you said it didn't look like a bear, in fact my comment was pointed at no one except the op and i dont see how you got that from my post. any way sorry you were put off.

Believe me, my bear leaves a lot of room for criticism, I didn't take Rick's or anyone else's comments negatively and thanks for the compliments. I was never any good in art class, so this is going to be a challenge for me especially with my shaky hands. I really enjoy making these things. I have another one to give away on Monday. My buddy loves muzzleloaders and I can't wait to see how he likes it. This stuff sure beats my regular insurance job.

Just looked at about 100 bear photos. On most, the eye is about midway between nose and ear. On this one, the left ear seems a little forward and the right a little too far back.

I know, everyone's a critic. :v

1st - great looking horn!
2nd - your bear: I wouldn't volunteer to take him on a walk ... :shocked2:
3rd - Horner gave you a great tip with the drawing of the bear in his reply ... notice the bears jaw? The outline of that jaw helps you to correctly position the ear..

Constructive criticizm is always a very touchy matter on forums. There are always more who take offense than realize you are trying to help them.
Horner should be thanked for offering some very good advice based on his skills and experience.

Suzkat,,if you have any doubts about your work, just send it to me,I'll be proud to tote that horn!!
