ANy recommendations for working with cow bone? Having a steer slaughtered in a few weeks. And I have a hankering to make a swagger stick that has the knuckle end of a leg bone on it for a handle.

How about using the steer's penis, I used to make swagger sticks and riding quirts from dried buffalo penises. (had access to a kill plant where they slaughtered the buffalo)

Hey mister..where'd ya get the pepperoni stick? :rotf:

seriuosly, good choice for your swagger stick. Easy to do, find your self a limb or fence rail with the right diameter, attach with 1 finish nail and let it dry out. you get a decent handle that way.

Bezoar,
To your original question I would say
have your butcher clean the leg as much as
possiable of all meat and fat. Let dry as much
as you can, then scrape off any excess matter
on the leg. Then I would soak it in a bath of
1/2 water to 1/2 bleach for 6 to 8 hours. Remove, rinse thougholy with cold water and again
allow it to dry, very dry. Then sand it down like
a piece of wood, large to small grit. Now seal
it with a primer as you would wood.Allow to dry
and sand again with 220grit. You may want to do
this twice. Let dry and apply the stain of your
choice. May want to do this 3 or 4 times with light sanding between treatments until you get the finish you desire. IMO I'm sure there are
many other ways to do the same thing. :hmm:

If you don't want the dried bone to shatter at some point, you want to soak it in some kind of oil based finish to fill the pores that were once filled with water. Sand and finish as you would any good wood, and use a good epoxy glue to attach it to your cane, or stick. Unless you are into BDSM, I can't think of anything more worthless than a swagger stick, but to each his own.

Do you have to wear a particulate mask when sanding bone?Working Ivory you have to.The dust from Ivory is bad for your lungs. :hmm:
