Beeswax for Horn

Where can I get Beeswax locally? Ace doesn't have it and our small local hardware store doesn't have it. I'm thinking maybe Michaels or craftstore, is this correct?

Also, will Toilet Wax Seal work?

No toilet wax, it is not entirely made of wax and is extemely sticky and messy. The local craft store may have beeswax, or some folks use the paste floor wax in a can to seal their horns. I like to use beeswax to seal the plug end as well as a sealer for the entire horn surface.

I have found beeswax locally at sewing supply centers. You might also try craft shops or maybe one of those natural food places? The toilet seal rings I've seen lately are no longer made of beeswax - too expensive I guess.

Sporting goods stores that cater to fly-tyers. Sewing shops (to wax thread). Candle making suppliers (yuppie head shops).

Search online for it in google. Stumpy's link is a good place, as a two or three lb. block will last you a long time and even with the postage will be cheaper than a sewing or craft store. In one of these stores you will be paying the same per ounce, as you will per pound on line, and you can make his "Moose Snot With it" :winking: as well sealing horns waxing barrels, stocks, horns. Lots of uses, and not much cost. Bill

sometimes I can find a block of it at local craft shows....the Birkenstock wearing crowd will have it for sale...not often, though...Hank

Michaels should have it, Hobby Lobby the crafts store should have it, and any sewing store should have it in small circles for waxing thread. Ask at the counter. I got a 1# block at Hobby Lobby last year if I remember it was about $8 may be wrong but it works. Also if you have a store near you that sells or makes candles they should have beeswax.

If you run across anybody selling honey they would have beeswax. Also Ebay usually has some.

The ironic part is my father in-law has 4 beehives, but he has never kept his wax.

I went to michaels today while I was in town, and purchased a 1 lb block. It was expensive $13 but I really didn't want to have to order it. I should now be able to finish my horn this weekend.

Most bee keepers that I know trade their beeswax in toward the price of their new wax foundations. Therefore they are reluctant to sell off their beeswax after extracting the honey.

Look on Ebay. There is usually a guy on Ebay selling blocks of beeswax and he ships as many as you buy for the same price as shipping one block. His prices are pretty cheap also.

reasonable on price(like$5.00 a pound) and they
won't kill you on shipping.
It's a small family run bussiness, and they
are very easy to deal with.
They are out of Michigan.

i keep bees, if ya cant get any drop me a privet line and i'll get ya some, but reply here first so i can figure out how much to charge i'm from beaver county pa, in pa if you call your county ag agent he can give you the number for the local bee guild, they will have loads of it.
