I have a wide belt blank and round forged buckle.
What method of dying the belt, and decoration on it is appropriate for the fuur trade period? Thanks.

I just got done making my wide belt , mine is 3 inchs wide and I have a round buckle for it , I used walnut wood stain on mine to get the color , I stained it several times to get the color I liked , some areas are a nice brown , then some areas are a dark brown , its looks like its old as the hills , I showed it to some friends and they said it looked alsome . Also when the stain is dry I rubbed in some neatsfoot oil in the belt , you can use mink oil to , it keeps the leather from drying out .

Your belt looks great. Thanks for the picture and info. Did you put any design on the belt?
I was thinking about using a wood burning tool.

I didnt put any design on my belt , just liked it the way it was. I never thought about a wood burning tool to put in designs .
