If you are out trekkiing in the woods near fields and you have the opportunity to get fish for dinner but have no bait, in the stalks of these goldenrod plants a small wasp lays an egg in the stalk. The Stalk swells up to this bulb as the larva grows. You can cut these bulbs open and use the live larva as bait. The bulbs make a pretty good bobber also after they dry and turn brown.
