Thanks to all who responded to my first post. Lots of good info.
Am still looking to pick up my 1st ml. Obviously don't ant to spend a lot of money.
This is going to be almost entirely a bench-target gun so I'm thinking .40-.50.
Where are some good places to keep an eye on? Thanks, Matt.

I'd keep an eye on the classified section of this forum. I've seen some really good deals come along. Another place to check is your local gun show. With the rush to buy black rifles before our illustrious leader bans them, the dealers can't give away muzzleloaders. I'm seeing lower prices there than I have ever seen before. Unfortunately, the economy has hurt me to the point that I can't pick any of those deals up!

Like everyone has said, the classifieds here and Track of the Wolf. Since you seem to be looking for one that's primarily for bench-target work, then you can get one with a straight barrel which will be a little cheaper than those with the swamped barrels, which are better for off-hand shooting but are more expensive.

I agree. The MLF Classified ads are an excellent place to buy a gun.

The way I look at it, when you buy from a pawn shop or any other stranger in your town you don't know them from Adam. They also have no fear of selling something that is defective.

Although you don't really know the members here they really don't want their web names given as someone who cheated other members.
They also tend to know a whole bunch more about muzzleloaders than any "man on the street" that might want to sell his "old muzzleloader".
Most of those people don't have the foggiest idea of how to take care of one which explains why I've seen so many for sale at gunshows that weren't even cleaned after they were last shot.

There are a lot of good deals on the clasified on all the ML forums, as for a new gun the Lyman Great Plains with the ball barrrel is hard to beat for a first gun and if it don't float yer boat that have a good resale value aas well.
