adirondack46r said:For those of you that own Lyman rifles, what is the best approach to lightening up the finish on the stock? Mine came with a very dark finish, and I would like to see a little more grain. I was thinking of a light sanding to start but the stain appears to be quite deep. I know it is common to bleach the wood when attempting to restore wood furniture. Are there other techniques you have used?
Thanks,

If the original question about lightening the color isn't too far back downriver, I'm convinced that a lot of the "dark" in Lyman stocks is right in the finish itself, rather than stain in the wood.
I wanted to refinish mine and rather than sanding I applied an "eco friendly" paint stripper from the hardware store. Imagine my surprise when the uniformly dark stock revealed a great big strip of yellow sap wood at the front of the forend! It had been completely obscured by the Lyman finish. Along with that, the whole stock lightened so much that I ended up adding a little walnut stain to hit the mid ground between original dark and unstained. Still can see that yellow sapwood, but several coats of stain right on it never did re-darken it to any degree. The rifle shoots too well, so I can live with it.
