it seems like there has been a lot of talk about making fire and char cloth lately and i remember a long time ago in muzzle loader mag there was an article about it. i looked up in the september october issue of a pilgrams journey a storey called another chance mark baker talks about a fellow named james moore who uses fungi or rottn wood instead of cloth so i went out inthe woods found some of the fungi on a dead birch tree chared it in my tin can that i started with char cloth :haha: and then tried the new chared fungi well i believe it starts as easy as cloth but lasts a lot longer than cloth but when i tried to snuff the char out you couldnt do it so i tried to pull it apart with my striker and you couldnt get beyond the glowing ember it seemed to be smoldering everywhere and i tried it 2 more times with the same results. in the story he also talks about charing in the open fire without the tin and snuffing it out in ground for 10 minutes. i believe in the eastern hardwood forests this would be easy to find but dont know about the western foests but should be easy to find rotten wood just thought i would pass this along :results:

that stuff really does work had a old 200 year old oak split a few weeks ago and fall to the ground and white oak that is rotten works good once it sets in the sun few days and drys out then break it up and char it in a small tin and the stuff will last fro a while  :front:

A friend of mine demonstrated the use of tree fungus as a fire starter and it worked amazingly well.
