blackening a front sight

What's the best way of blackening the top of a front sight after filing it?

Apologies to those who've written about this before - I've seen it discussed somewhere else on the forum but just can't find it.

Black Magic marker.There is one put out by Birchwood casey I think.It's called Sight Black.
I have used soot from burning a candle. :m2c:
 
Thanks for both of these suggestions. The problem I had was that everything I tried rubbed off during cleaning and handling. I even tried using some model paint, but that added a layer that I then had to file off.
