Anybody have a pattern or suggestion for making a blanket cover for my hawken?

I made a couple of them for some camp rifles- what I did was...

Fold the blanket in half then set it, nice side out, on a large woorkbench. Put your rifle, barrel about 1" from the fold on top of it and adjust for the nicest pattern (if the blanket is striped or something). Mark a line about 1-1/2" around the rifle in chalk- leave about 8-10" at the butt. Add another 1/2 to 3/4" and cut out the blanket (use a sharp scissors or utility knife, just don't cut up the dining room table too much.

Turn it good-side in and sew along seams. I use a double-needle running stitch 1/2" in from the edge, and then a whip stitch to "roll" the edge along the long seam. At the muzzle end I add a bit of scrap leather for reinforcement and a little extra protection.

Turn it right-side out and add some ribbon or lace ties to secure the butt-end flap.

Hope this helps,
vic

Thanks to both of you for the info. The NW Trader site has patterns for everything!

Thanks...suspected if I looked far enuf that someone would have asked the same question I had. Thanks for this information. :redthumb:

I made one from canvas duck by simply laying the gun on it and folding over the canvas. I then pinned the material around the perimeter of the gun. I sewed it up, painted it with a period color, sewed a channel near the gun entry hole for a tie and turned it inside out and painted that side as well.

Not particularly padded, but pretty waterproof and resists scratches.

Wad up a piece of wool and shove it down the cover so that the muzzle will rest against it and protect the muzzle and ramrod from damage.Since it's best to stand rifles muzzle down in your safe, closet or wherever, the added wool will allow any drainage of oil to soak into the wad rather than the end of the cover itself and you can always replace the wool wad. :imo:
