i know it is probably a pretty simple project but does anyone have a pattern to make one from a wool blanket, or where i might find one online...thanks

It`s a simple project, you could make your own pattern from some wrapping paper or something. Fold the paper around the rifle and cut it to the shape you want. Then use that for your pattern. Just make sure you make it big enough to allow for the stitching.
I`d be easy, I know you could do it

You can find patterns, but they are late 19th century, sold as "Mountain Man." Avoid.

Trade guns were supplied with red (stroud) covers like this

Notice it is fairly tight. Make a pattern from newspaper. No fringe, no stripes.

No fringe........
Actually the basic pattern of a long "tube" didn't change all that much (some had one piece bodies - others two piece)- mainly the decoration increased based on comparisons with the leather cases illustrated by Catlin & A. J. Miller in teh 183's vs tha later post 1860's cases - and yes some had fringe - just one example circa 1834......
from Colonel Dodge meeting with the Comanches - Catlin - fringe and beadwork....

Well, yes, leather has fringe. Wool does not, until those late 19th c. capots. And 20th/21st c. Mountain Man stuff copying the style of the late capots.

I noticed, that you never mentioned you wanted a PC blanket gun cover, so you can make it anyway you want! As was mentioned. Just fold over paper (newspaper works) like an envelope for your gun and draw an outline. Transfer the pattern to your blanket material, mark and cutout. When you make your pattern. Be sure to make it a little over-size both in width and length. Whip stitch or blanket stitch it together and your ready to go!

Most people consider designs and styles that are pre-1865 "Period Correct."

In Pichou's defense I would simply point out that this site focuses on firearms and accoutrements that date no later than roughly the time of the Civil War. We try to help each other with suggestions on what would be appropriate and historically authentic. That's one of the reasons we don't discuss in-lines on this site. That's not to say you can't make a scabbard out of pink polyethylene with plastic beads if it floats your boat, but you might want to find another forum that would feel more like home.
A lot of the good folks who post here have worked hard to gain a grasp on what the REAL America was like 150 years ago and more. They deserve our respect or at least civility.

Amen!! to that.

Let's take it easy guys we are here to learn and have fun and escape from the stresses of work and modern life. I would think helping someone out could be done without all the hype, rules and bashings. :hatsoff:

Aren't the bright dyes in the saddle blanket gun case post 1865?

Yes.

In that style, post 1930's, hand sewn or not.

But those who aren't interested in history lessons and forum rules dig that kinda Gander Mountain Man-Hippie Crafts stuff.
