blown patches

I did some target shooting today with my .54 GPR caplock. I used the same components that I have used for years. Group size was disappointing, thinking it was just me having a bad day. Then I noticed I was getting blown patches. This has never been a problem before. Tried using more lube but that didn't help. Anybody have an idea why this might have happened and what I could do to fix it?

Something has changed...review each and every detail of todays shoot vs. last...each and every component, each and every step, etc

How old are the patches, and were they pre-lubed? If pre-lubed and old, they may have deteriorated.

I have seen rifles that were used with pyro. or 777
and cleaned with oil base cleaners do this. They
will carbon up real bad. Try some Butch's Bore
Brite, if you get black greasie patches keep cleaning
until you get the carbon out. The bore will have
tight and lose spots from the biuld up. That keeps
the patch from sealing. Happens slowly over time.

I had some patches that were pre-lubed from a prior shoot that I thought was the problem. I threw them out and started again with fresh cut patches (pillow ticking). Cleaned the bore and felt for any tight or loose spots or any roughness, found none. Loaded carefully paying attention to how smooth the bore felt when ramming the ball home, same as always. Same ball, same patch, same lube, same powder, same charge, same sequence. I check patches when ever I find em and this has never been a problem. The rifle has always been a very good shooter too. The lost of accuracy is particularly troubling. ::

I have no idea why, but when I first started shootin my weapon everything was ok, then I started smokin my patches and missin my mark while firin after bout 2 or 3 boxs of rb's ,, I (HAD) to go to ffg, was usin fffg, Now all's fine,, My weapon just changed it's feelin's,, I hear they do that,,, As I said, I don't know why, I just know it did,,,,

That is strange...particularly from one range session to the next...unless it's very gradually been going that way and it finally just became apparent?
Was weather / humidity significantly different...were you shooting any faster than normal, ie: barrel heating up faster than normal? etc...dunno...if it was a TC barrel I'd have them replace it

How much powder were you using. If it was over 70gr. you were probly burnin um. Or were the land tears? Or the barrel is shot out.

Whoa I hope a shot out barrel isn't the case! I've used 70 grs of Goex fffg powder and a tight ball/patch combo, .535 ball. Starts OK with a short starter and loads good.
Maybe some roughness on the lands that I can't feel.
Wonder if a couple of passes with fine steel wool on the cleaning jag would help. Or would that hurt the barrel more then it might help???

That shouldnt hurt it any or burn a hole. Is it fairly new?
There's a bore compund that i cant remember the name of... maybe that on a patch would work.
Hold it you said FFFg... nope FFg .50 cal or over FFFg burns faster. If its burnin a hole go to FFg, in its not burnin the patch its somethin else. Here's a test try 50gr a FFFg see what happens. Good Idea?

It might be thought that by the number of guns i have purchased I just a while a go got a senica .36 and love shooting the little begger :agree: I got a .50 cal last fall for fifty dollars that shoots really well but it seems to leave a smoldering patch behind is that normal with a small powder charge and a fresh lubed patch ?
