...wow, i tried these yesterday in my .62 caywood wilson. split one in two ,loaded half about 1" down the bore, then the .600 ball , then the other half, rammed it home...shot better than any patched combo, point of impact was 6" higher, readjusted sight picture, and wow put 4 in a 2" group at 25yds, and was able to land em in the black at 50 yds....was using 80gr 2F and there was a nice "crack" instead of the usual blast... :front:

Sometimes you find that happens. I used to do that with my .20 ga Tradegun instead of a patch because the bore was too tight a fit to use anything but a very thin patch with a .600 ball. Whatever works, right.

I got some of the blue and gray wads I'll have to try that in my Fussil

Shucks, my 20ga Fusil won't be here for another month+. But I'm gonna try that, and some .570's with real thick patches.

Well, I tried the half wad/ball/half wad thing with a 0.600" ball in my Caywood fusil. It hit 12" lower than my "standard" PRB load at 25 yards. Not good, but ya' never know 'till ya' try. I guess my gun doesn't like that mix.

I have seen two production guns (both the same) shoot completely different, so trail and error will let you know exactly what your gun wants...

You might even want to try a wad between the powder and patch round ball...

thanks for the tip, but I actually have a couple of loads that shoot well, I was just curious to try the suggested method. As long as my gun shoots well with a straight PRB on the charge, that means less stuff to fumble with while loading.

While on the topic (sort of) it is amazing how much faster one can load, after a little shooting. I was a real greenhorn only a few short months ago, and loading was an almost comical diplay of dropping things and wishing for a 3rd arm. Now, I load from my horn and loading block at the range and can do it pleasingly swiftly. :front:

I have found in my smoothbores that i get better accuracy with a wad under the ball. I actually use an overpowder wad and fiber cushion wad, but i glue them together, (after punching a small hole through the overpowder wad to let air escape,) so there is only one thing to handle. After gluing them together, i lube the cushion wad by dipping it in some melted Crisco. This helps to clean and lube the bore, so i can shoot longer strings of shots with no bore swabbing. :m2c:
