I slipped and put a small bright ding in my browned smoothbore barrel. Years ago I know there was a blue touchup product. Does anyone know of a brown touchup, that doesnt involve dismounting the barrel, humidity, carding, etc? It's just a little tiny ding. Appreciate any suggestions (did somebody mention stoveblack in some context a while back?) Thanks, ron in fla

Theres a product called Plum Brown, I usually use it on screw heads when I have forgot about them when browning the rest of the lock. I'll have to make sure about how to apply it, but I think you may have to warm up the piece a bit. I'll find out in the morning for you.

If it is just a little ding dab a bit of yellow mustard on it and let it dry, when dry rub the gunk off. You may have to do it a few times to get the color to match but it has worked for me. The vinegar in the mustard is what makes it work but being that it is mixed in with the mustard as a sort of paste it stays in place pretty well while drying. I know it soulds a bit odd but it works okay.

Plum brown does need to be heated, so its not a great idea. I think I would try Plumebleu's idea, sound like it would work. I like the fact that it would stay in place.

And I have found Van's Gun Blue to be the best for such.

Also great to use for small nicks on browned steel, just use a cotton swab to apply sparingly, will blend in with the browning and is almost unnoticeable.
