Bobby Hoyt Bored GPR ,.58 Smooth!

Rec'd my barrel back from Mr. Hoyt. Had my GPR .50 bored to .58 smooth, the largest MR Hoyt would recommend. Barrel cut to 26 in, Front Sight and rib cut and re set. Put real Gold Leaf on the sights, They really light up now. Made a new ramrod with pinned steel tip. Rifle handles beautifully, and now 7 lbs 2 oz.! Can't wait to try it out!

What is the size flat to flat? I can only go to .54 on my Traditions and it's a 7\8".

It appears to me that there is plenty of barrel left to go a bit further, but I am not the Gunsmith and Mr. Hoyt has decades of experience and a reputation that is among the best. Therefore i will have to defer to his judgment. I had originally asked for 20 gauge, .62 but Mr Hoyt said there was not enough barrel to do it safely. Someone just reminded me on another post, the Under rib is 'screwed" to the barrel. Those screw holes probably are the limiting factor in boring the barrel!!!

My turnaround was only 41/2 weeks . I got it in on Dec 2nd back Jan 6th, including mail time and holidays!I was fortunate to get it in before he stopped taking work.

I had Hoyt rebore a 54 Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken to 58 caliber. I wanted 62, but be deciding factor was the screw holes in the barrel for the under rib. But at least with the 58 I can hold the rifle up better. Completely changed the balance.

Thanks, I totally forgot about the under rib being screwed to the barrel. You may be absolutely correct!! The balance on mine is amazing, so fast to shoulder and easy to hold!

I think you are correct about the screw holes!!!

I'm keeping my Traditions 50 cal barrel and having colerain make me a 7/8" straight octagon .54 smoothbore to put on it as a switch barrel. going to have them make the barrel a few inches longer and turn those few inches past the nose cap round when it gets here. I thought I could go to 58 cal or bigger but they said no. My barrel has tenons for pinning and the nose cap is screwed to the barrel as well, so like you that likely limits how big they can go. Let us know how yours shoots! excited to hear!

Been wanting to do this for a while, I’m glad to see someone doing it! This is a great way to repurpose them old roached barrels that your pappy forgot to clean back in the day! There is so much meat on them barrels you have options. Keep trying to find a machinist to do it for me bc I would like to refinish old production guns like that and get them in operation again! Please let us know how it shoots and you got a nice All around gun right there! Heck put an L and R replacement lock on that and other then aesthetics your reliability is going to be up there with any other custom gun

Are you planning on .56 ball? Or maybe even full bore bare ball?
