back in the oldy days the celts and the romans used bog iron some times called bog ore appairently in an acidic swamp ferous oxid pesipatates out and forms a kind of lumpy loking rock taht is mostly iron there was an actual trade up to fairly recent times in different parts of the world where the person ,men women and children would wander tese swampy lands with a iron probe sticken it in the ground and when they hit smrthing dig down to it and then sell it to a blacksmith the first exsports of iron from the colonyswere from virginia from the great dismal swamp then pawtucket ri had a big bunch up there back in the sixtys when i was hangin around the blacksmith shop at clonial williamsburg a history peoffesor from william and mary named harcom brought some to the shop and wanted us to work it down to useable iron man was that miserable stuff!!at a forgein heat it was spongy as hell and when i hit with the sledge it would just sink in it was full of hples and all kinds of junk it took a while probaly ten heats but it turned out to be pretty good stuff not like wrought iron from puddling but real simerler if you ever go to wiilliamsburg the old shop was down by the jail and they had a stock outside there for punishin people for varios things old mister allgood and a blckman named black and acorse he was nicknamed blacky thought it was hilarious to grab me up and put in the thing they make me tell all my girlfreinds names etc corse thts where the bus stopped and all the tourist got off!!they tought it was very funny i was about twelve then your frein truckwilkins
 
Truck: Seems on one of the blacksmith forums that I heard of someone smelting bog iron in a bloomery and eventually coming up with some pretty good stuff -- just as you say. Not exactly something you would want to make a damascus knife out of but useful nonetheless. And yes, you look for springs or seeps where the muck is bright orange to collect your "ore". Do you have any photos of objects smithed out of bog iron?
 
no but that was back in the sixtys but im going to have some pictures of stuff i made fpor the last of the mohicans movie sone my dotters helpin me scan them in your freind truck wilkins
