I was contemplating building an underhammer pistol as a winter project. What book or books would anyone here recommend for a beginner? When I was a teenager I build a CVA flintlock from a kit but this is a definite step up in things. I appreciate any responses.

This isn't really a "how-to" book, but it does show photos of many original rifles and pistols, along with several drawings of different actions if you want to build your own. The book is "The Pictorial History of Under-Hammer Guns" by Herschel Logan. You can also search on line for under hammer actions and guns.

Jeff Baron has a book called the Underhammer Rifle that might be of some help if you don't know how they work. I would consider it more of a rough outline than an actual construction manual. Fortunately they are mostly relatively simple mechanisms and shouldn't give you too much trouble.
