Morning all,

What is the ratio for Black Mag 3 to BP? Is it the same? Equal? Less? :: And Yes by volume not weight. I know that part thanks to reading thing already posted.

Thanks.

kodiakemt414,
from my experience the black mag is a tad
hotter. :imo: by volume i personally would cut back by 5 or 10grms on your powder measure and go from there and see what your groups tell you :m2c: :imo:

snake-eyes :peace: :)

Good deal. Once again the group has the answers. Man I love this site. A newbies dream come true.

Thanks.

i have not tried black mag 3 in my ml's but hsve used several others .
what i suggest is drop your usual load with goex (say 100gr) to 80 gr and work your load up.
as with most bp substitutes their pressures are usually higher so you have to drop your volume a little bit . i have been reloading center fire ctg. for twenty years and the rule has always been start with your minimum load and work up .5 gr at a time until tou find your best load.
for my .50 i would start at 50gr for my .45 i started at 30gr. both of these loads are for rifles, for pistols i would start at 15gr for .45 and 20gr for .50 and work up
for myself after i use up my 777 i am going strictly goex.
good luck

"...the rule has always been start with your minimum load and work up .5 gr at a time until tou find your best load...."

The .5 grain incriments sounds like a good rule for smokeless, but IMO a person could drop the powder charge down as was suggested and then work back up in 3-5 grain incriments with the substitute BP powders. :)

this happens when you got bp smoke in your eyes and tryin ta see the keyboard when you type :bull:

sumtacks BKack?? whats' bkack??

At are what ye ain't a sposed ta bend whan yer liftin heavy stuff.

It are a combination of the words "back" an "crack" but Ah thin it are abbreviated. Spelled out in full it would be B-KRACK but whan ye leave tha R out it just becomes BKack. :: ::

Now, back to the powder.

 I'm glad that I could provide a little laugh for you all. Actually it means that there needs to be spell checker on this site, cause this man can't proof read to save his life. ::

Due to the requirements of compressed loads in BP ctgs., I usd the same process in my .45/77 (.450 ALaskan in BP gun) using a measured 76gr. weight of Black Mag 3. This load gave me a speed of 1,500fps even, using a 505gr. Lee cast bullet in WW with gas check. The accuracy is splendid.
: In the 50-70, I received typical velocities, ie: 1,250fps using a 450gr. Lyman bullet and 70gr. weight of Black Mag 3 in an original 22" carbine barrel. The action is a modern one, made in Italy as only the barrel is original & a Sharps re-lined percussion one at that(contract of 1867/68).

Does anybody know what black powder will give you the most speed? How fast are Black Mag' 3 or Triple 7? Or American Pioneer thechnology? ThanX

And am I able to use a small amount of smokeless powder in my T/C Black diamond?

No smokleless powder of any amount should be used in it. There is only 1 muzzleloader designed to shoot smokeless, and as far as i'm concerned, the manufacture of that gun was a big mistake. As for the other powders you asked about, none of them are black powder. They are all substitutes.

I had a .50 T/C Hawken nicely zeroed at 50 yards with 50 grains of 3F Goex. When I switched to Black Mag 3, 50 grains, the zero remained the same. However, I was shooting a flinter and never could get the thing to fire every time with the BM3. I plan to use BM3 in my percussion cap weapons. It sure makes cleaning easier. That part of their advertising is true. Graybeard
