Does anyone have experience with Birchwood Casey's Brass black? Did it do a good job and was it worth doing. I have a 51 Navy with brass frame that I would like to make look like it has a steel frame. Thanks

If you do a good job of removing all of the wax and oil from the brass, it will turn it black.
The coating is very thin though and the slightest abrasion or scratch will remove it and leava a nice bright brass area or streak showing thru.

If you do use it, I would recommend (Close you eyes everyone), coating the blackened brass with a clear spray paint.
OK, you guys can look again. :)

i used birthwood caseys perma blue....use some 0000 steel wool to clean it good and polish it and put it on with a q-tip heavy let sit fer bout a min and wash off with water....see how the brass butt plate and nose cap came out with it..............bob

Instead of black try tarnish. use black powder residue as the agent jest rub your dirty cleaning patches on that clean shiney brass and watch it age. puts a nice old used look on the brass shine gone. Works on other metals. My bud and I were at a camp he had some nice new shiney copper pots we aged em quick useing this method after cleanig our smoothies, looked ike they been to 100 camps! :imo:

A gunmaker friend uses brass black alot. My experience is that it is not as easily removed as said above. He also uses it on steel parts to obtain a "patina" finish.
