A friend asked me recently about brass percussion cappers like the ones made by Ted Cash. He wanted to carry one but had heard that they were not PC. Did such things exsist in the pre 1840s or were they a modern appliance? I thought that the cappers for revolvers were around then and perhaps the rifle loaders would have been as well, but I didn't know. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Colt made their Patterson in 1836, so I doubt that a inline capper would have existed prior to that if it was even used at all back then...

A good capper can be made from heavy leather, punching holes just slightly smaller than the cap so a snug fit can me made...

The leather capper can be cut to any pleasing shape and hold as many caps as desired...

I have a leather musket capper sewn to the underside flap of my shooting bag to keep them dry, I just flip the flap up and cap as needed...
