i have some moose horn that would make a great short starter, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me where i might get the brass fittings?

Just get a brass rod from your local hardware. Cut to length and chuck it in a drill press and file it down to size. Then epoxie it in yer horn  ...Bud

Track of the Wolf has them. I don't normally use a short starter, but lately I needed one for 2 production rifle barrels that I picked up cheap. I made it from some broken/scrap ramrods a friend gave me, and a round wooden ball from the craft store.

Total cost was 99 cents.

The gun works has a few of the buttons and rod ends listed. thegunworks dot com

I have also used rifle and pistol cartridge cases, deprimed and semi drilled out primer pocket to get the cupped effect. I also tap these to accept 10-32 jags and such.

I use .38 S&W brass not special on 3/8 walnut rod sand rim off on belt sander and use dremel with round stone to get the cup effect works great. :)

I have used the 38/357 brass as well as 9mm. They fit well on a 3/8 dowel.

I have made several from 38 spl casings. I have also used 32 acp and 32 long casings for .32-.40 cal rifles.

All the suppliers sell the fittings for ramrods, and short starters. You need to fit the ferrule to your rod, and then drill a cross-hole, and pin and epoxy the ferrule to the rod. I prefer having a ferrule that will allow the use of a Delrin( synthetic) muzzle protector on the rod, so I can protect the muzzle during that all important first step of seating the PRB.

If you go to Membership Services, on the index page to this forum, and look for " links", click on it, and you will get to a list of suppliers. Most have on-line catalogues. Track has good pictures of its products, so can learn what you are buying, or looking for.

I won a T/C Short starter, with the Wood Ball handle, stainless steel rod, brass, tip, and delrin muzzle protector in a shoot more than 25 years ago, and am still using it. I have a short starter I made, and was just given another one made entirely of Delrin. I don't know if I will get around to using the new one, unless I dedicate it to One gun, and put it permanently in that gun's shooting bag.

As others have suggested, you can use cartridge cases and/or ramrod tips to make your short starter. Here is one I made 20+ years ago using a scrap piece of RR and cartridges.

Hey Dave,

No pics and the he moved a few years ago, but a friend had one that was "pure Alaskan." He had a native carver turn out the seater from walrus ivory, then mounted that on a hunk of moose horn. Talk about cool looking and unique!

Know any carvers? You might take a brass one for an example next time you swim upstream against the road belugas to Anchorage and hire a carver there to turn one out. If you didn't like white, doing the same from fossil ivory would be hot deal, too.
