I know theres a lot that don't care for them but I am tacking a rifle stock,my question is do you tack the stock on one or both sides? this rifle does not have a cheekpiece

Do you mean like the decorative tacks found on some rifles in the 1800s?

If so, look for weapons owned by 19th century Native Americans and if possible look for multiple views so you can see all around the stock.

I tend to cringe when I see some of those rifles, but if trying re-create a historical firearm from a certain period, I guess it might have some value.

If that is not what you mean, then as Roseanne Roseannadanna would say "Never Mind."

I'm a buckskinner and do this for fun so authenticity isn't too much concern,Just messing around with a cheap old production rifle

Some time back this topic was raised. One concern was that one of our members had facial hair which would get caught in the tacks every time he shouldered his rifle. :idunno:

If I was to mount tacks on the rifle I would mount them on the opposite side of the stock and not your firing side.

Respectfully, Cowboy

Here is the "Robidoux" S.Hawken in the museum in Lincoln, NE. (He made a mechanical drawing of this rifle and sold the blueprints some years ago). It had a lot of brass tacks which someone removed prior to the museum acquiring it.

The cheek side was also tacked.

For a beater gun subdued tacking can't harm and may look good. But I treasure the appearance of my guns and wouldn't think of pounding in tacks.

I love them on a place where they belong. Used to do them a lot, now I don't own a tacked gun. They don't fit in my place. Never had a beard hair stuck in one. I could see where that might get your attention.
Tacks might be tacky but they did one or two tacky things back then.

Members should use great tact when calling the use of tacks, tacky least they be attacked by others.

I never called them "Tacky" Me and nhmoose made a couple jokes about tacks, but we never called anyone's guns tacky. I happen to like the look, myself. Someone else make the comments that you are referring to.

I kind of like the turtle too.

I notice the tacks on that gun have been kept somewhat minimal while still giving an aesthetic look.

I would still be very reluctant to put tacks on any of my arms, even if any could be considered a beater.

Adding tacks is a matter of personal preference but I would point out that accurate placement is critical. Even the "turtle" rifle has a couple of misplaced tacks on the fore end. They may be only 1/16" or less out of line but they sure immediately attract attention.

And drill a hole to place them in. I added some to a wrist on a straight grained maple. The first time I shot it after putting the tacks in the wrist popped, a clean crack ran from one tack in both directions  I never was able to repair the stock with any thing that would last.
