REDUCED This is a fairly worn, but salvageable example of a British Pattern 1858 Enfield 3 band smoothbore. These guns were bored to smoothbore and issued to Indian colonial troops after the India Mutiny of 1858. This one has seen better days, but I believe that wth a little sweat equity it could be made into a shooter. The barrel is 37" from breech to muzzle. The bore measures .685. It is rusty inside, but I have used Evaporust and Scotchbtite pads on similar bores and gotten them shooting again using standard paper cartridges or shot. The metal has light pitting in spots and a brown patina throughout, but a good polishing could make it acceptable. The wood is generally solid, with a few missing slivers and a tight repair behind the lock, along the barrel tang. The lock is pitted, but the crown and ENFIELD are visible. It works, but the trigger is sticky. No telling how long this sat unused. Possibly an Afghan War bringback. Looks Correct. The nipple comes out easily and tightens up. It would be ideal to redrill and tap for modern musket nipple. Like all antique guns, this one should be inspected by a knowledgeable gunsmith prior to firing. Good project gun for $350 + Shipping.
