Ok so totally my fault last night was adjusting my set trigger on my 62 caliber Jaeger and accidentally let the **** fly foward with out a flint and it broke off in the neck area and landed on the couch. :( The Lock is a R.E. Davis lock (again totally my fault). I went online and saw that they sell replacements that are ready to go on the lock. I have tried calling several times today and gotten a VM. I eventally just faxed my order in to them.(is there some big event this weekend?) My question is has anyone had dealings with them before? How is there customer service? Do they normally get parts right out to you? Do they return you phone calls? Anyone Anyone....if this doesn't work out does anyone know where a suitible replacement **** could be found? Should I just buy a new lock completely?

Thanks
Paddy O'Furniture

Calm down, it will be ok!

I suspect that they are a pretty small operation and don't have anyone to answer the phones. If they don't have the part ready to go, you can see if Track of the Wolf has it in stock.

I guess I did sound overly frantic. Sorry about that. I had totally forgotten about TOW. Contacted them and they have the part in stock. The replacement part is an "upgrade". Does this mean there was a flaw in the original design or could it just be a more historically accurate design?

Paddy

If its the lock I'm thinking of, the **** is more of a different style than upgrade. Nice lock! Their customer has always been top notch. He goes to a lot of events, but will get back to you as soon as is possible.

Ok, you have the Davis "Jaeger" lock then. There are two **** styles, the original one, and the new one. You could use either one, depending on what you want. The new one looks better, and probably will work better, depending upon the particular lock you have. It will have to be fitted to your tumbler, and they do not leave you much extra metal to play with, so be careful. (basically both the tumbler and **** are cast to a size then the **** is rammed onto the tumbler with a press.. ) It would be nice if they made the tumbler with a teeny bit of taper. That would make the parts fit together much more easily and they would fit better.

I would say that it still shouldn't have broken like that, though. Look at the break and see if there is a casting pit there.

I would agree with Stophel. It should not have broken. Sooner or later, everyone lets a **** go without a flint, or with the frizzen open. If it broke from one incident, it would have broken later from normal use. I have heard that Davis is pretty good with their warranty.

I had a rifle delivered once with a Chambers Colonial Va. lock and the **** was broken off in the box. No abuse on the box, either. I just sent the lock back and it was quickly returned perfectly fixed. I guess what I'm saying is that anything can happen which has no reflection on basic quality.

Looking into the base of the broken off piece, i can see a line (about the middle third) of the **** seems to be solid. the two thirds on either side of that show what appear to be a large amount of large "crystals".

Let me just say that I am not nor intending to say anything detrimental at all. I am VERY pleased with the lock, it has sparked very well. (I am the second owner of this rifle). I very much like the internals and ease at which this lock throws a shower of sparks. :hatsoff:

Yep, that's a casting inclusion. It happens. You could send it in, and I suspect they'd take care of it for you.

WOOOHOOO! NEW **** IN THE MAIL! SHOULD BE HERE BY FRIDAY! BACK IN BUSINESS! :applause:

New **** came in yesterdays mail. 20 minutes of filing ..........then an hour of test fitting the wood to lock fit. Now with the new larger replacement piece fitted, the shower of sparks in the pan is immense!

I'm not a fan of Davis locks. They told me themselves they outsource the casting and have essentially no quality control over the process, including checking if the steel powder used by the caster is correct.
They told me this after five Jaeger locks went back for replacement. Then the final, the top jaw shattered on first use. My builder hand filed a replacement rather than depend on Davis again.
However, this is Veteran's Day weekend.
And, anyone in the muzzle loading business will, on occasion, close up shop to attend ml events and vend their products in person. It is good marketing.
I'm glad your replacement is coming.

Looking at E.J. Blackley online a Kuchenreuter flintcock caught my eye. I don't know if it was for a pistol or rifle. Regardless, how much of a project would it be to make it work right? Don't know if it's worth the trouble really. Just curious.

I sent a Davis lock back to them because it was very slow and did not spark well, he said the springs were bad and replaced them at no charge.
Tim was great to work with.
