does anyone know where i can find a new mainspring for 1778 liege contract bess?

I may be mistaken, but I severely doubt there are any original mainsprings available. Would you be willing to accept a reproduction OR some other original spring IF it fits?

What is the length from the center of the hole for the mainspring retaining screw to the center of the hole for the pin? Also, what are the diameters of the pin hole and the mainspring retaining screw or at least the hole for it?

Gus

i would take a reproduction if i could find one, screw to pin is 1.19" screw diameter is .185", pin diameter is .14"

I found this from Dixie Gun Works here is the listing TS6901 Mainspring (repro.) for 2nd & 3rd Model Brown Bess Musket & Italian Made Repro. TS6901 Mainspring (repro.) for 2nd & 3rd Model Brown Bess Musket & Italian Made Repro.

Hope this helps...TAC2..

i have one from track of the wolf that is the same size as the one from dixie , its a 1/4 " short unfourtunatley i might attempt to modify it and make it work if i cant find something better.

So far with those measurements, I can tell you what mainsprings will NOT work, due to too short of length from the pin to the end of the bottom leaf:

1. Original M1842 Musket
2. Repro M1842 Musket
3. Original M1816/22/40 Musket (BUT since these were NOT made on the interchangeable parts pattern, my two mainsprings may not reflect all of them)
4. Repro M1816 Musket

I am sorry, but it is too late and I am too tired to disassemble my "Recent Model" Pedersoli Bess, but I think the mainspring will be too short, as well, from the pin to the end of the bottom leaf.

I don't stock French Musket parts and MAYBE some of the repro's on the early models MIGHT be able to be fit.

With these measurements at the ready, I would first suggest you call Dixie Gun Works and see if they might have one or one that could be fitted.

These are two places in the UK who could make one for you:

If you want to stick with in the U.S., you might contact Earl Kathan:

Hope this helps a little.

Where are you ? ,at times it is easier to have one made to fit your lock ,FYI that is how it was done back in the time of your lock .

im in northern Idaho, i emailed track of the wolf we will see what their spring measures at otherwise i will probably just have to have one made.

If you do have to have one made, it will be best if you send the entire rest of the lock you have to the maker, so as to make/fit a new spring to it and ensure it works properly.
