Noob question here:

When browning a barrel, or blueing for that matter, what do you do about the bore? If browning is a form of rusting, wouldn't that be a "bad thing" in the bore of a barrel?

Most use a Browning Solution that is wiped on the area of the barrel that you want to brown or blue. You just don't wipe any solution on the inside of the barrel. When browning a flintlock, I alway put a little clay in the touchhole.

Right the bore is left in the white. what I do is use a wood dowel of approximately the bore size (.50 cal. 1/2 inch dowel). Plug the barrel with the dowel positon upright so the bore is pointed down (I use my bench vise on the dowel not the barrel) and then blue, never tried to brown, but my cold blue jobs usually end up brown over time :hmm:
Waya :m2c:

Bob ol' buddy,
Could you explain this a little more. You don't install the touchhole liner first? If not how do you file it flush to the barrel and get rid of the screw slot, without messing up the browning on the barrel.

Install the liner and file flush first. Inert clay or a tooth pick into the touch hole. Apply solution to barrel.

Use the search feature and you should find a huge post on browning techniques under my name. Some good stuff there.
