I have tried to download some plans but for some reason I get a message that the file is corrupt and not usable. Also found a couple copies of Lauber's Wheellock book on Amazon.....for a paltry $125 a copy! Anybody able to help a novice to at least decide if I want to proceed? I understand that it takes some dedication, but I have built a few guns and am pretty handy with wood working and metal working tools. Thanks for any help.

Mazokid,
If you were to search for my threads, you would see me struggle, accompianied by pictures, in building wheellocks. Now I don't claim to be an expert. It's just that I have been in your shoes back in 2001. I learned much from others on this and another forum.
My struggles could help you at least to decide whether or not to proceed.

Mazo Kid,
Check your email, and good luck!

Adam, many thanks to you and to BioProf for your assistance. This project will take a back burner for a bit as I have other irons in the fire as well as yard work, wood cutting/splitting, etc. Again, many thanks to all who have offered assistance! Emery

I did search for your posts but there were so many unrelated that I stopped. If you could point me to a link, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

mazo kid,
There are two principle threads. Go down the present page to: another wheelie/volatpluvia

Then go back to 01/08/06 and look at:
redhairedgal gets a new lock.

The older thread is not of a traditional lock.
The newer thread is a traditional lock, but it is not finished. But both will give you some insights. And there is much discussion as the work progresses that will be instructive.

Thanks Leon, I found both of them and have them saved. WOW!! Excellent documentation of the builds and makes the operation and inter-action of the parts much easier to visualize. Thanks again for your efforts in making the process available. Emery

Check out the Home Gunsmithing Forum. You have to pay a membership fee of $30.00 to be able to download plans. They have the same wheellock book amazon has.

Or you can do a search online for it and download the whole book (trust me, I got them that way). Unfortunately, the plans aren't 100% accurate, as I found out when drawing them up in CAD, so expect to move some holes a little and do some minor tweaking. Should be a fun project.

Glad you found them. It always gives me a lift when I can help another on the way.

I'll send you a set of plans for the Wheel lock
No dimensions but what they look like inside..
Hope is helps. I made this one in 1962 an a few
more since then....I use the torch sparker with
absloulely no problems..Dale Shinn has been
making them that way for over 40 years...and he
has made a lot of them..

wulf,
I am thinking of making a rasp lock utilizing a torch striker. In fact, I may just buy the torch striker and use the holder and the tiny rasp. The problem I have had with the torch striker on a wheellock is the blast coming out of the flashole incinerates the 'flint'. This makes it a one shot wonder. Now if your flashole is angled so that the blast doesn't hit the 'flint', that could be the secret of your success.
