I just finished reading an article concerning the Excise Tax.

As a part of the Federal Highway Construction Bill there was an ammendment eliminating the requirement to pay the Excise Tax for builders of 50 or fewer guns per year. (Gun List October 7, 2005 page 12).

The article quotes a NRA press release as saying:
"For nearly 30 years, under a baffling web of IRS regulations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tried to collect these 'manufacturing' taxes from gunsmiths (including years' worth of back taxes, in some cases), even if they were only modifying firearms that had been made in a regular gun factory".

:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

So basically the ATF/.GOV gets to keep all of the money they stole in the first place without any penalties? Typical.

I am not faulting the Excise Tax which is placed on all outdoor sporting equipment.
That tax was instigated by sportsmen to help the Game and Fish departments with the expense of managing the wildlife during a time when uncontrolled hunting and market hunting was causing serious harm to the animal population.

My reason for being pleased about the removal of the tax from gunsmiths who work/build less than 50 guns per year is it removes the burden of record keeping and payment from those of us who make and sell a few guns a year.

Any move to restore freedom to the people I applause. This move is small in some peoples view but for freedom fighting Americans it is a nice victory.

Glad to see individuals not treated as a big company. As far as the wildlife tax goes there is more game now where I live than there was in the mid 1800's. Some things they do in Washington actually work :youcrazy:

That's good news, but one wonders how it fell under the Highway Construction Bill?

Have to check the Federal Military Base Closures Bill and see if there's any changes to the use of lead shot for hunting migratory waterfowl??? :youcrazy:

zonie, so guys like you who were being taxed for something you weren't doing (building guns for a living) are just out a bunch of $? That was my point, they took your money then admitted they were wrong without paying back what they took? :bull: IMO. It is a good thing that they got their thoughts in a straight line finally, but still it seems wrong to me.

Well, I don't want this thread to turn into a political discussion. That was not the purpose of the Post.
It was intended to alert the builders to the fact that they won't have to worry about that aspect of making and selling their guns.

As to how the ammendment got attached to the Highway Bill? As they say, two things you never want to watch is making sausage and making laws. ::

It looks like the bill was intended to "clean up" various excise tax provisions. Apparently the provision pertaining to gunmakers fell within the "Sport Excise Tax". Hoorah for whoever sponsored the exemption! Although a bit difficult to decipher, it looks like booze may also be cheaper in the future ::
